The C-SPAN Archives at Purdue University
Purdue is a leading research institution, member of the AAU, and public land-grant university. Under the direction of Dr. Robert X. Browning, the Center C-SPAN Scholarship and Engagement (CCSE) was established to promote discovery, learning, and engagement using the C-SPAN Archives. Using some of the over 260,000 hours of C-SPAN political history over the past 30 years, faculty and students have examined important elements of our political past. Since its founding, CCSE has generally promoted research on access and transparency of governmental institutions by offering research grants to faculty, sponsoring workshops and panels at national meetings, holding national research conferences at Purdue, and highlighting studies using the Archives in annual research volumes.
Dr. Bryce J. Dietrich recently joined CCSE as a research scholar in the Fall of 2022. His research uses novel quantitative, automated, and machine learning methods to analyze non-traditional data sources such as audio (or speech) data and video data. His work has appeared in prominent journals like the American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, Nature Human Behavior, Political Analysis, and Political Psychology. In addition to securing external awards from the NIH and NSF, his work has also been covered by prominent media outlets like The Washington Post, The Economist and National Public Radio (NPR). His most recent work using C-SPAN has looked at gender and social dynamics on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
